Born in Los Angeles, California, Lusko competed in her first bodybuilding competition in 1979, finishing third in the Robby. Robinson Classic at home. The following year, she ranked 9th in the contest Ms. Opening Olympia. Focusing on Olympic-style lifting, in 1983, she became the first woman to lift more than her head weight with one arm.
That year, she placed second in the 60kg division of the National Olympic Women's Weightlifting competition. In guest poses, Lusko performed a vigorous female action in which she squeezed men weighing nearly 200 pounds over her head and rocked a 135-pound dumbbell over her head.
